VC Podcasts: The Essentials

I recently wrote a guide to VC Twitter for students, bankers, operators, and anyone else interested in breaking into the world of venture capital:

In addition to this, I felt it would be beneficial to compile a list of some of the essential VC Podcasts. Subscribing to these in bulk (in addition to following the Twitter list) should keep you plugged in to all things startup and venture. Below are some of the most essential VC podcasts that you should be listening to:

Equity Podcast (TechCrunch)

TechCrunch should already be a website that you find yourself reading on a daily basis if you’re trying to break into VC. The equity podcast IMO is the top destination for startup and VC news. You’ll also benefit from the hilarious duo of Danny Crichton and Alex Wilhelm which make it super enjoyable to listen to. I’ve told Alex that he should be doing standup…

Twenty Minute VC (VC:20)

Harry Stebbings will walk you through “the wonderful world of venture” by interviewing some of the most legendary venture capital investors. Disclaimer: the episodes will be a lot longer than 20 minutes. In all honesty, I’m amazed that this podcast is still free because Stebbings could easily charge $50–100 per year and probably have thousands of paid subscribers (maybe I shouldn’t have said that)…

Hosts David Rosenthal and Ben Gilbert go behind the scenes on the biggest tech IPOs and M&A events to uncover the inside stories. They also have an awesome private Slack group where you can interact with like minded listeners in the VC and startup community.

Masters of Scale (Reid Hoffman)

Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn and Partner at Greylock, hosts fireside chats with legendary founders detailing how they’ve grown startups at lighting fast scale. These talks will give you a deeper appreciation for how things work on the other side of the table.

P.S. I highly encourage grabbing a copy of Reid’s Blitzscaling.

This Week in Startups (TWiST)

jason, Founder & CEO of LAUNCH, meets with some of the most interesting founders and VCs detailing updates in the space, forward outlooks, and deep dives on personal success stories. All episodes are filmed so you can also watch on YouTube if you prefer visual + audio.

Angel Podcast

Also run by jason, this podcast features leading angel investors sharing their success stories and life paths. For those unaware, Jason is the premier expert on angel investing and the author of Angel: How to Invest in Technology Startups. His angel portfolio includes Uber, Thumbtack, Robinhood, and Desktop Metal.

a16z Podcast (Andreessen Horowitz)

Software is (still) eating the world and a16z’s Podcast will guide you through the continuation of the Andreessen Horowitz thesis. I have found these podcasts to be great for deep dives and more technical analysis of specific sectors. I would recommend you get a solid understanding of VC before diving into these podcasts.

Greymatter (Greylock)

Again featuring Reid Hoffman is Greylock Partners’ Greymatter podcast. Similar to the a16z podcast, I would recommend this podcast for advanced listeners with a deep understanding of or experience in venture/startups.

The Boost VC Podcast

Adam Draper is the founder & Managing Director of Boost VC, self-described as “the Pre-Seed fund making SciFi a reality.” For fans of deep tech (myself included) this podcast is an excellent way to stay up to date on the latest trends in blockchain, AR/VR, crypto, AI/ML, etc. It also features top-tier founders and VCs.

Something Ventured

Kent Lindstrom’s Something Ventured was previously named by Forbes as one of the best business podcasts. This podcast features top founders, tech executives, and thought leaders across Silicon Valley.

The Tim Ferris Show

Although not a VC specific podcast, the Tim Ferris Show is arguably the most successful business podcast. For those unfamiliar with Tim Ferris, he is a prolific author, podcaster, investor, and life hacker. Tim’s famous works include the 4-Hour Workweek as well as Tools of Titans and Tribe of Mentors. Tim’s content is an absolute necessity for high achievers looking to maximize their potential in the world of tech, startups, and venture capital.

The Pomp Podcast

Again, though this podcast is not specific to just VC, it is one of the best podcasts out there. Anthony Pompliano (Pomp) is a Co-Founder & Partner at Morgan Creek Digital and previously held positions at both Facebook and Snap after serving in the U.S. Army during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Pomp interviews some of the best VCs, founders, investors, and tech leaders. He also makes sure to ask everyone about their opinions on whether aliens exist.

On the Brink

For fans of blockchain/crypto VC, On the Brink is an absolute necessity. Co-Founders Matt Walsh and Nic Carter provide weekly roundups in both newsletter and podcast format in addition to interviews with top founders & investors in the blockchain and crypto space. Disclaimer: Prepare for ruthless scrutiny of “private blockchains” and altcoins.

Internet History Podcast

Host Brian McCullough teaches the history of the internet primarily by interviewing the people who built it. Particularly for people early in their venture careers (like myself) it is important to gain an understanding of the history of internet technology in order to have a better view of the present and the future. P.S. You’ll want McCullough’s book as well.

Other Lists

This list is not comprehensive of everything out there, and surely some will disagree with parts of my selection. The below articles show what some others consider to be the top VC podcasts:
